Reynoldstown Trivia FREE Answer FOR Week of February 10th
Answer: The odor of dynamite in her yard
In 1932, Alma Hicks prevented two attempted bombings of her home on Manigault Street by detecting what warning sign?
(Answer is for trivia at both Park Grounds & Wylie & Rum)
What’s Behind the Answer:
In 1932, Alma Hicks and her daughter Dorothy, both Black women, moved into this house on Manigault Street.
Reynoldstown was established by Black people after the Civil War, but all development across Flat Shoals was considered the “white side” aka “forbidden territory”.
In August, she smelled the odor of dynamite and called the police before it was detonated. They found three sticks placed in the front yard. On October 7th, a second attempt to bomb the home was made, and once again she was able to find the sticks before the explosion.
In a rare turn of events, the police actually charged someone with the crime – three white youths, ages 22, 16 and 16. Their bonds were posted by 5th ward alderman J.E. Bowden.
